Prep School

Our Prep School curriculum offers an ambitious and broad learning experience, balancing core and foundation subjects to children aged 6 to 13 years. Children spend around two-thirds of their time with trained Prep specialist teachers, who provide consistency and a strong foundation across English, Mathematics, and other key areas. Children continue to use Oxford Reading Tree resources, supported by a banded book scheme and a range of books from additional reading programmes. They attend weekly Library sessions to further develop their reading habits. From Year 2, children are grouped by ability in English and Mathematics to ensure that teaching is appropriately targeted.

This is complemented by subject-specific specialist teaching in Physical Education, Music, and the Creative Arts. We encourage children to take ownership of their learning, developing confidence, independence, and curiosity as they progress. Every learning opportunity, whether in the classroom, outdoors, or through wider school life, is maximised to inspire, challenge, and nurture each child to thrive academically and personally.

Learners Enjoying Success

We prioritise tracking each child’s attainment and progress throughout Prep school. Teachers use a combination of ongoing observations and regular teacher assessments to build a detailed picture of each child’s development.

This is supported by CAT4 assessments, which provide valuable insights into a child’s learning potential and a range of standardised assessments that allow us to benchmark progress against international expectations. By bringing these measures together, we can identify individual strengths, highlight areas for support, and ensure that every child is on a pathway to achieve their best.

Our Approach

Our teaching approach is rooted in the British National Curriculum, designed to build knowledge and skills progressively in line with age-related expectations. Phonics sessions continue in Years 1 and 2, with the child-led approach gradually shifting to become more teacher-led, and children do an hour of English and Mathematics daily. Throughout the lower years of Prep, learning remains practical and hands-on, giving the children the chance to explore, experiment and engage.

As the students move into the upper years of Prep School, they naturally develop greater independence and study skills, critical thinking, and preparation for the next stage of education become the main focus.
