Curiosity, creativity and excitement filled our A Level Art Studio as the Head of Creative Arts Ms. Sarah Burn and I welcomed our Year 8 pupils from Prep School for an inspiring Senior School Art Taster Lesson. The session offered an authentic taste of Senior School learning while reflecting the strong collaboration between our Prep and Senior Schools.
Working from a carefully arranged still-life display of everyday objects, including lollipop sticks, a basketball and sports equipment kindly loaned by our Sports Department, pupils explored three fundamental drawing exercises that challenged them to see, think and create in different ways.

The session began with blind drawing, where pupils drew with their eyes closed, encouraging confidence, focus and freedom from the fear of making mistakes. They then progressed to drawing from memory, where they were given a few minutes to carefully study the still-life arrangement before it was covered. Using only what they could remember, they recreated the objects from memory, developing their visual recall, concentration and imagination. The lesson concluded with drawing from observation, where pupils carefully studied the still life to capture its shape, proportion, tone and detail with greater accuracy.
One of the highlights of the morning saw pupils gather around as I demonstrated the process of drawing from observation. Their curiosity, thoughtful questions and enthusiastic feedback created a lively atmosphere, with many amazed at how careful observation could transform their drawings.
A special thank you goes to our Sports Department for generously lending the sports equipment that formed part of the still-life arrangement. It was a wonderful example of the interdepartmental collaboration that is at the heart of the Braeburn community, where departments work together to enrich learning and create meaningful experiences for our pupils.
The morning was filled with curiosity, creativity and laughter, giving our Year 8 pupils a memorable first experience of Senior School Art. We look forward to welcoming them into Senior School next academic year and are excited to see the creativity, confidence and enthusiasm they will bring as they continue their artistic journey.
Love it - Learn it - Live it!
