Aztecs Curriculum Day

28th February 2022

In order to enhance the pupils' learning on their topic 'Aztecs', Year 6 held a special curriculum enrichment day. Who are the Aztecs? Well they were the Native American people who dominated northern Mexico at the time of the Spanish conquest in the early 16th century. Living a mainly nomadic culture, they eventually settled on several small islands in Lake Texcoco where in 1325 they founded the town of Tenochtitlan (this is the site of modern-day Mexico City).

Pupils undertook various activities which included; creating a serpent mosaic, designing Aztec shields, learning about the Aztec numbering systems as well as creating their own stories using the Aztec glyphs/codex. The pupils were exposed to important skills of the Aztecs, namely hunting, fishing, farming, art and the unique architecture of pyramids, temples and palaces. The knowledge of the ancient Aztecs emboldened the pupils to generate a sound connection with today's world and develop an appreciation of the diverse cultures around the world.
