13th June 2025
By Eva and Berenice (Year 7)
On June 13th, Braeburn celebrated World Environment Day with a fun and inspiring day full of hands-on activities. This year’s theme was “Beat Plastic,” and everyone from the youngest to the oldest pupils joined in to learn how, as a school community, we can reduce, reuse and recycle plastic. There were games, crafts, and discussions all about how plastic affects our world and what we can do to stop it. “World Environment Day is making sure our Earth is clean,” said Zachary from 4S. Felix from 6S added, “It’s a day to celebrate the nature around us and be aware of plastic pollution.”
One of the coolest parts of the day was that Year 7 pupils got to be the leaders! We helped the younger kids understand how plastic is harming the environment. “We listened to a story called Somebody Swallowed Stanley — it showed how a plastic bag can harm sea animals,” said Ryan from 7K. There were also fun stations where pupils played games like the Taka Taka Treasure Hunt and made insects out of recycled plastic bottles. We even had special visitors from Mr. Dudu’s recycling company, who told us how they turn plastic waste into art like mosaics and sculptures.
At the end of the day, everyone had something to say about how we can help. Otis from 3K said, “The environment is dying. Plastic pollution is very bad.” Calum from FS2K simply said, “Pick trash and put it in the rubbish bin.” Even our teachers shared their thoughts — Ms. Caldwell reminded us that we all have a role to play, and Mr. Anderson said young people like us could help lead the way. It was a meaningful day that showed us we all have the power to make a difference!
