Braeburn School takes on London!

2nd May 2026

What happens when you take 19 students from Year 9 through Year 13, drop them in the heart of London, and tell them to find their way? You get the most transformative school trip of the year! Over the final week of March 2026, our students embarked on a "Creative Arts & Culture" expedition that proved to be much more than just a sightseeing tour. Planned and led by Mr. Juma, Ms. Burn, and Ms. Noela, this trip was a high-octane journey designed to push boundaries and inspire the next generation of creative thinkers.

Living Like a Proper Londoner

This wasn't a "sit back and relax" bus tour. Our students lived like true Londoners, navigating the city’s veins via the Tube and local buses.

Mastering the Map: Armed with Google Maps, students took turns to navigate routes to places independently and guide the group through the bustling streets, buses and trains in London

Budgeting for Success: Students quickly learned that a snack from Tesco is much kinder to their pocket money than buying at a tourist attraction!

Planning the Route: They had to decide between the speed of the Jubilee Line or the cost-effectiveness of a bus - vital life lessons for future university days and life ahead.

The "Queue" Culture: Perhaps the biggest cultural shock was the British love of queuing! Whether it was for the bathroom, a show, the bus, standing on the escalators, our students learned the patience of the UK queue - a stark contrast to the faster pace back home, but a lesson in order and discipline.

Engineering Wonders & Scientific Discovery

The trip offered a deep dive into the mechanics that keep a global city running.

The Thames Barrier: Students explored this incredible mechanics system, learning how it works to prevent London from flooding. It was a powerful lesson that for major engineering to work, maintenance processes cannot be compromised.

Art & History: At the Tate Modern, students explored international modern and contemporary art, including the massive installations in the Turbine Hall. They also visited the Imperial War Museum to explore personal stories from the Holocaust.

Science & Natural Wonders: At the Science Museum’s Wonderlab, they participated in live experiments involving sound, light, and forces. The group also visited the Natural History Museum to see Dippy the Dinosaur, the Blue Whale (Hope), and the earthquake simulator.

The High View: From the IFS Cloud Cable Car 90 meters above the river to the glass walkways of Tower Bridge, they saw the city from every possible angle.

A West End Masterclass

With a leaning toward the Creative Arts, we treated our students to the "best of the best" in world-class theatre, opening their eyes to the diverse jobs available in the industry.

The Lineup: Students experienced the folk-opera of Hadestown, the high-energy Disney stagecraft of Hercules, the fashion-forward drama of The Devil Wears Prada, and the comedic genius of The Play That Goes Wrong.

Behind the Scenes: At the V&A Museum and the Harry Potter Studio Tour, they explored prop design, animatronics, and the evolution of musicals.

Pushing Boundaries & Building Friendships

The trip was as much about physical grit and teamwork as it was about culture.

High-Stakes Fun: Students tackled the treetops at Go Ape Battersea, navigating zip wires and bridges to inspire adventure.

Team Logic: In Camden, students faced an Escape Game, using logic and problem-solving to beat the clock.

Adrenaline: A full day at Thorpe Park allowed students to explore the physics of G-force on coasters like Stealth and The Swarm.

A Global Menu: From Nandos and Five Guys to the authentic flavors of Chinatown, Wagamama and Camden Market street food, the students enjoyed a culinary tour of the world.

We are incredibly proud of how our students represented Braeburn School throughout this action-packed journey. They returned not just with suitcases full of souvenirs, but with the confidence of global citizens who truly know how to navigate the world. What began as a group of students from Year 9 to Year 13 who were often hesitant to speak across year groups ended as a unified, bonded team. By the time they were packing their bags at the YHA London Thameside, they hadn't just seen London, they had conquered it. Between forming lifelong friendships, sharing endless stories with rib-cracking laughter, and filming TikTok dances in the biting British cold, they gained a level of independence and resilience that will serve them long after they leave Braeburn.
