BTEC Business Takes on Health & Safety

16th May 2026

Who knew the school kitchen, science labs, and sports fields could be such vital business classrooms?

Our Year 13 BTEC Business learners took their Health and Safety in the Workplace unit to the next level this week. By stepping out of the classroom and onto the bus, the kitchen, the gym floor, and the playing fields, they stepped into the shoes of our staff to explore the complex hazards and safety protocols required to keep a large organisation running smoothly.

From managing equipment safety in the sports facilities to understanding chemical protocols in the labs, seeing theory come to life is where the real learning happens!

Check out what our students had to say about the experience... ..

Today’s Health and Safety sessions were actually really interesting because they helped me understand that safety at work is way more serious than people think. One thing I noticed is that every workplace has different risks depending on the environment. For example, in the kitchen they focus more on hygiene, burns, and handling equipment properly, while in the labs it’s more about chemicals and wearing protective gear correctly. I also liked how we got to see real examples instead of only learning theory in class because it made everything easier to understand. Overall, the sessions helped me realise that Health and Safety is important everywhere and small mistakes can actually cause big problems if rules are not followed properly.

One of my key takeaways from today’s Health and Safety sessions was learning about the transport department and the many measures the school takes to keep students safe on campus and during travel. I was impressed by how seriously transport safety is treated, from the stop and go signs at zebra crossings and the clear road signs around campus to the designated drop off and pick up zones for Ubers and taxis, all of which help reduce the risk of accidents.

We also learned that all school buses are equipped with first aid kits, seatbelts in good condition, emergency exits and repair tools in case of emergencies such as a flat tire. In addition, there are clear bus rules in place to ensure students are safe while travelling. What stood out to me the most was that every driver must complete an annual medical and eye check up to ensure they are fit to safely transport students. This showed me how committed the school is to maintaining high safety standards and protecting everyone in the school community.
