Characters Come to Life on World Book Day!

2nd March 2023

On Thursday 2nd March, we celebrated World Book Day. The tradition to celebrate books and reading began in 1995 when the first World Book Day was held by UNESCO; since then it has become a day that is enjoyed by children and teachers around the globe. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Changing lives through a love of books and reading’. Pupils and teachers showcased their favourite books and characters with rather exceptional costumes, with both groups enjoying guessing what character the other’s costume portrayed.

Throughout the day the pupils participated in activities aimed at unlocking some “reading superpowers”. To get us ready and into the mood, Mrs. Child’s taught the whole school a wonderfully catchy World Book Day song and dance. This was a great way to ensure that our day would be filled with enjoyment linked to reading and books. As we all know, a good book starts with a great story, with this in mind, the pupils had the pleasure of listening to a traditional story told by the Kikwata Storytellers. Hailing all the way from the Ngong Hills, the Kikwata Storytellers also added some upbeat drumming to give that added authenticity to their story. In the afternoon we were able to see that ‘Braeburn’s got it Write’ as we had some Braeburn past and present pupils sell their published books. Our day ended, as all days should, with the pupils having the opportunity to settle down, have some quiet time and read during our 'Booknic'.

We are excited to see what surprises next year’s World Book Day brings. Until then, let’s all keep on reading.
