Checkmate: The Braeburn Knights Sweep the Chess Board!

24th April 2026

Braeburn asserted its dominance in junior chess this past weekend, pulling off a historic "double" by securing back-to-back championship victories. By sweeping the Inter-Braeburn Tournament on Friday, 24th April and the IAPS Championship on Saturday, the BGR "Knights" have proven to be the ultimate grandmasters of the school-level circuit.

The Opening Move-Friday 24th April:

The chess weekend began with our players facing off fellow Braeburn schools. The team showcased incredible depth across the primary levels, proving they have a winning strategy in every age bracket:

  • Under 8: A stellar performance saw Yonatan (Year 2) clinch 2nd place, with Zayn (Year 2) following closely in 3rd.
  • Under 10: Andreas (Year 4) continued the momentum with a strong 4th place finish in a highly competitive field.

With high-ranking finishes and consistent scoring across the Under 8, 10, and 12 divisions, our Knights were crowned the Overall Champions.

The Endgame-Saturday, 25th April

Less than 24 hours later, the team returned to the boards for the IAPS Junior Chess Championship. Despite the quick turnaround and a broader field of elite schools, the Braeburn stamina remained sharp, and our Knights gained the highest number of points for the day.

Braeburn Team Standings:

  • Overall Best School: Braeburn School (33 points)
  • Under 13 Best Team: Braeburn School (13 points)
  • Braeburn Team B: Tied for 3rd Place Overall (24 points)

Individual Stars:

  • Under 13: Dhairya and Zijun (both in Year 8) placed 2nd and 3rd respectively, and also scooped the Best Team trophy.
  • Under 11: Kazuma (Year 6), and Victor (Year 5) placed 4th and 8th respectively.
  • Under 9: Andreas and Mandy (Year 4), placed 4th and 6th respectively, while Yonatan (Year 2) placed 7th.

Securing two major titles in just 48 hours—including Overall Best School and the Under 13 Best Team—is a testament to the students’ dedication and tactical skill. Congratulations to the Braeburn Knights!
