On Saturday 31st January, we embarked on what for many of us was our first community service visit to Kibera- the largest Urban slum in Africa! We had a range of Year Groups attending along with enthusiastic teachers, all eager to engage with the community and learn more about these children.
Despite the several challenges faced in the area, the children were friendly and ready to take part in the various activities we had prepared for them. This included maths, English (reading and comprehension skills) and art.
The visit was a powerful reminder that community service is as much about what we learn as what we give. While we were able to offer support, we left with a deeper understanding of social solidarity and the importance of resourcefulness. It was a humbling experience that challenged our perspectives and allowed us to bond with our peers with a shared sense of purpose.
A huge thank you to all the teachers who organized this - their efforts created a meaningful experience.
For anyone who hasn’t taken part in a community service visit, it is highly encouraged that you sign up for the next one. It is a unique opportunity to step outside the classroom, connect with our wider community, and see the impact we can make when we work together. Don’t miss out on being part of the next journey!
