Community service project at Muslim primary school- Kawangware

1st October 2024

We are excited to share a heartwarming story from our recent community service initiative that truly highlights the spirit of giving back and the power of education. On Saturday, September 28th, 2024, our dedicated Braeburn community service team visited Dagoretti Muslim Primary School to engage with young learners in a meaningful way.

Our student volunteers took on the rewarding task of teaching various subjects, including Mathematics, English, Art, and Chess.

In Mathematics our volunteers introduced new and Interactive ways of teaching percentages and fractional multiplication.

The English team engaged in group reading and vocabulary activities which included a spelling bee and a game of hangman.

In Art, the team helped the children explore different aspects of artistic expression, in particular drawing and an introduction to colour theory.

Chess, headed by one student in particular, was aimed at introducing the children to how the game is played and different ways of ‘thinking outside the box'.

This experience has reinforced our commitment to supporting educational initiatives within our community.

We believe that by investing time and resources into these young minds, we nurture future minds who will contribute positively to society.

During the Chess lesson, Lakshita began by recalling the previous session, and asking each student to come up to the board and demonstrate what they had learned. To help them comprehend the Knight’s movement, She had them walk in the shape of an L to mimic the Knights unique moves on the board. As the lesson progressed though, they discussed the key strategies and tactics essential for mastering the game, such as controlling the centre, developing your pieces early.

They talked about the importance of castling and capturing, which aided them to understand how to secure their King more effectively. In addition, Lakshita introduced them to the concept of Check and Checkmate, followed by the distinction between openings, middlegames and endgames. Lastly, to make the lesson highly interactive, the students then played against her, allowing her to identify the areas where they required more guidance. This was truly a remarkable experience, especially after many continued playing chess and were curious to learn more about this.

Chess is more than just a game, it is a celebration of intellectual fortitude.

Thank you for being part of the Braeburn community. Together, let’s continue inspiring young men.
