As part of their Geography topic on 'Tourism in Kenya', our Year 6 pupils were recently challenged to design and build their own eco lodges — and the results were as creative as they were inspiring! This exciting hands-on project allowed students to deepen their understanding of sustainable tourism while applying design, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
After learning about Kenya’s key tourist destinations, the impact of tourism on local communities and the environment, and the importance of eco-friendly practices, pupils used this knowledge to inform their lodge designs. They carefully considered materials, waste management, energy sources, and how to blend their structures with the natural environment — just like real-life eco-lodge developers. Pupils worked in groups to plan and construct detailed models using recyclable materials, complete with features like solar panels, water collection systems, and wildlife-friendly landscaping.
The finished eco lodges were a wonderful showcase of learning, innovation, and teamwork. Well done, Year 6, for combining learning and creativity to build such thoughtful and impressive eco lodge projects!
