Exploring the World of Sound with Year 1s

27th September 2023

In a recent scientific adventure, Year 1 delved into the fascinating world of sound, from creating their very own cup telephones to discovering the inner workings of our ears. During the interactive session, they embarked on an exploration of sound waves using a simple yet ingenious device—the cup telephone. Their little faces marvelled at how sound waves travelled along the string, enabling us to communicate with each other from a distance. This hands-on experiment opened our Year 1s to the wonders of sound transmission and sparked curiosity about how our ears play a crucial role in this process.

Furthermore, this curiosity encouraged our inquisitive learners to take a deeper dive into the intricate mechanisms of the ears where their newfound knowledge allowed them to appreciate the complexity of the auditory system, from the outer ear that captures sound waves to the inner ear where sound is transformed into signals for our brains to interpret. Understanding the parts of our ears that aid us in hearing was an enlightening experience.

To further cultivate our appreciation for the auditory world, we embarked on a captivating sound walk. This activity encouraged our young ones to tune in to the soundscape surrounding us. Armed with keen ears and open minds, they set out to listen to the myriad of sounds in our environment.

Our Year 1s encourage you to embark on your own sound walk adventure. Listen to the world around you, draw what you think is making those captivating sounds, and continue your exploration of the auditory wonders that enrich our lives. Sound is not just something we hear; it's a journey of discovery and appreciation.
