FS2 Explore Tree Bark in Ngong Forest

27th January 2023

Every month, the early years children get an opportunity to visit the forest to learn both within and about nature. In doing so, they develop their observation skills and enhance their physical, cognitive and emotional skills.

On Friday the 27th January, FS2 children visited Ngong forest. The focus was to learn about the benefits of tree barks, use the senses to feel the textures and to identify and compare the different types of tree bark. During our visit, the children learnt that there are people who illegally debark trees for varied reasons, which is harmful to the tree and is causing a threat to their survival within the forest.

The Early Years children look forward to these trips, indicating that learning in nature has been beneficial in more ways than just gaining new knowledge. It has helped pupils to develop an enthusiasm for learning, as well their ability to stay focussed on one activity for a longer period of time.
