On Saturday, 50 pupils drawn from Peponi House, Kenton, The Banda, Braeburn Mombasa and the host school, Braeburn School, participated in the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) annual chess tournament.
The event was divided into three categories: U9, U11 and U13, with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers being awarded gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
Aaryan Sennik (Braeburn Mombasa) was the U9 champion with 4/4 points, as Vyan Borthakur also of Braeburn Mombasa pipped Ariv Grover (Peponi) to take the silver position on tiebreak after both players were tied on 3 points apiece, as Ariv settled for bronze. In the U11 category, Kavishan Magalinga Patten of Peponi had 4 points to clinch the gold as Chanel Mackenzie (The Banda) with 3 points took home the silver and Peponi's Flynn Gardner won the bronze.
The 2021 African Schools Individual Chess Championships (ASICC) gold medalist Lakshitta Dutt (Braeburn School), who will be participating in the 2022 World School Individual Championships to be held from June 10-19 in Panama City, won the U13 category with the maximum 4 points on offer. In 2nd place after amassing 3 points was Thomas Gilbody (The Banda) relegating Mahi Shah (Peponi) who also had 3 points to 3rd place on tiebreak.
The four round event organized by Terrian Chess Academy was a resounding success with the participants exhibiting great chess playing and sportsmanship.
