IAPS Triathlon

4th May 2022

A team of budding Braeburn athletes attended the annual IAPs Triathlon competition. The triathlon consisted of the following distances:

U11 had the following

  • 375m swim
  • 6km cycle
  • 2.4km run

U13's had the following

  • 500m swim
  • 8km cycle
  • 3.5km run

The total time for each event is calculated, including the participants' trainsition times. For many of the children, it was their first experience taking part in a triathlon. They were taught about the transition areas and how to arrange their equipment for their next discipline, in order that they could save time when moving between each one. Triathlons are very tactical events where participants need to consider their pacing, both in each individual discipline as well as the event as a whole.

Once the transition areas were organsied, pupils were set to go, race numbers attached, clothing in place and off they went! WIth the swim taking palce first when pupils are most excited, participants must ensure they don't start too quickly. Braeburn's swimmers were steady, and mindful to keep their energy reserves. Both Ivar (U11) and Lara (U13) got off to a good start in their swims, showing some efficient swimming and consideration for what was to come. The bike came next, where the transition area is key. The pupils exit the water, make their way to their bikes where they have all they need for both the bike and run. Helmets must be placed and be strapped up before the competitors take their bikes. After the transition, competitors vanish off around the school site to complete their bike ride. The bike course was sticky and wet, but ridable. Some of the Braeburn competitors found the bike tough, with a couple of technical issues that they had to fix for themselves! Once the ride was completed, the competitors made their way back to their transition area to get ready for the final discipline, the run. The final but toughest stage, legs are tired and lungs are spent!

All competitors from Braeburn finished the race and gave their all throughout the competition. Everyone showed great resilience, determination and grit to complete the course. Lara finished in a fantastic 2nd place in the U13 category; and we expect final results to come through soon. Well done and thank you to all who took part. We look forward to next year's competition!
