Many successful people often credit their achievements not just to talent, but to a few guiding principles that shape the way they approach learning and life.
Recently, during our transition morning for parents of Years 7 and 8, our Year 9 students were helping to guide families around the school. During one of these moments, a parent, an established businessman, shared some of the values that have guided his journey which was an inspirational guide for our learners.
He spoke about what he calls the “Five Hs,” principles that have shaped both his career and life, and that offer lessons for students and parents alike.
Happiness is a choice we make every day. There will always be challenges in life, but focusing on the positive helps us approach life and learning with energy and resilience. It teaches us to face setbacks with courage and keep perspective.
Success rarely comes without effort. We have to be hardworking. Steady practice and perseverance help us master new skills and lay the foundation for achieving goals, solving problems, and building meaningful careers.
Remaining humble keeps us open to learning. By staying humble, we are more willing to listen, ask questions, and accept feedback. Humility reminds us to value others, work as a team, and see learning as a lifelong journey.
True success is balanced. It is Holistic. Academic progress is important, but so are wellbeing, spirituality, friendships, creativity, and physical health. Learning to live holistically encourages children to grow into well-rounded individuals who can manage both achievement and life’s challenges.
A hunger to learn fuels curiosity and growth. It drives deeper understanding and engagement. In life, curiosity and passion help children and adults adapt, innovate, and continue learning long after their formal education ends.
As parents and educators, we play a key role in nurturing both the minds and hearts of our children. Our words, actions, and the examples we set every day, choosing positivity, working diligently, staying humble, seeking balance, and remaining curious, quietly teach them powerful life lessons.
The Five Hs are more than a guide for school success; they are a roadmap for life. When children internalise these values, they build habits that help them thrive academically, socially, and personally.
“The values we live each day quietly become the lessons our children carry into the future.”
