International Day of Democracy - Student Voice and Leadership at Braeburn

20th September 2025

This past Monday, 15th September, was World Democracy Day, a fitting backdrop as we prepare to roll out a new system of student leadership here in the High School. Between now and half-term, students will see the launch of both a revitalised House system and a new Student Government.

These changes are rooted in two simple aims. First, to strengthen our House system by building pride, competitive spirit, and teamwork across year groups. To support this, house points are being revalued so that they celebrate true excellence in academics, extra-curricular activities, and community service. A stronger house culture should not only give students a greater sense of belonging but also translate into more success in inter-school competitions, both sporting and academic.

Second, to bring together what has previously been a rather fragmented approach to student leadership. Our new Student Government will provide meaningful opportunities for students to take responsibility, have their voices heard, and work with staff to make positive changes to school life. In doing so, we hope to encourage active citizenship and equip our young people with the skills of collaboration, responsibility, and leadership.

The new structure has three parts. The Senate will be a senior body of Year 13 students (the Senators!), meeting fortnightly with me to shape policy and priorities. The Parliament will consist of elected representatives from Years 9 to 11, who will work alongside the Senators and staff to discuss issues affecting student life and propose initiatives.

Alongside these sits the revitalised House Council, led by House Captains and Senior Captains, and, of course, our House Coordinator, Ms Nzakwa, who will coordinate inter-house events, encourage house spirit, and ensure that every student has a voice in shaping house life.

From this year, the roles of Senior House Captain and Senator will carry equal prestige, involving many of the same responsibilities and opportunities for leadership. I would like to warmly congratulate our newly appointed Senior House Captains and Senators, who were selected this week. They have already shown great commitment, through the selection process, and will play a key role in shaping the success of these new systems.

Looking ahead, I encourage parents to talk with their children in Years 9 to 12 about the elected positions of House Captain and Student Parliament Representative. These will be contested in the coming weeks, and we hope to see many students step forward for leadership.

Together, these structures will create a more democratic, representative, and energised system of student leadership at Braeburn. I look forward to sharing more as elections and appointments take place, and to seeing our students step forward to lead.
