Journey to ABRSM Grade 5 Theory

6th December 2024

Hello everyone, my name is Ambar Joshi in Year 11. I am thrilled to share that I have successfully completed my ABRSM Grade 5 Theory Exam, passing with a distinction! This is the highest mark one can receive in ABRSM, with the lowest being a fail, followed by a pass, a merit and then a distinction. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the support and guidance of many incredible people.

First and foremost, I want to express my sincere gratitude to my dedicated music teacher, Ms Nangabo. Your unwavering belief in me and patient instruction were crucial in my success. You pushed me to reach my full potential and instilled a deep interest for music theory as well as making me a more knowledgeable and passionate musician.

Secondly, thank you to my parents and everyone else who cheered me on, if it weren't for you, I would have lost a lot of motivation.

For those looking to take up music theory, my advice is always keep practising past papers and apply your music theory knowledge when actually playing your instrument. Reaching Grade 5 is seen as a milestone because once completed, it not only stands out on a university application, but opens doors to perform at higher levels e.g Grade 6 Practical.

It definitely has been a challenging 6 year journey, but the feeling of accomplishment and success is truly rewarding.

Thank you!
