Senator Training Overnight @ Hell’s Gate

Last Friday, our Student Senators set out on a two-day leadership development safari at Hell's Gate National Park in a bid to improve teamwork, communication, and leadership in practice.

The hike started with a 1-kilometer hike to the initial destination, where lunch was eaten before their first challenge: tying buckets with ropes without touching them with their hands. Most impressive was how every voice was heard. Every senator contributed, and the group talked and tried different approaches carefully before deciding what to do as a team. It was a pure demonstration of collective leadership—listening, adapting, and collaborating on a single goal.

The second test, to navigate across a "toxic river" using plastic sheets alone, tested both creativity and endurance. With rain coming down in buckets, the senators congregated and brainstormed. Despite the rain, no one lost focus on the objective. Every one of them took turns upfront, recommending, endorsing, and leading one another until the team successfully crossed. The drill became one of perseverance, trust, and sound group decision-making.

After their 3.5-kilometer trek uphill, the group reached the campsite as the rain eased. Under the instructors directions, they set up their tents—once more demonstrating coordination and responsibility. As darkness fell, they broke into small groups to prepare dinner, sharing leadership and teamwork at each step. The senators then sat around the campfire, sharing stories, roasting marshmallows, and reflecting on the day's learning.

The following morning began early, with breakfast and a reflective group discussion on leadership, personal development, and points of improvement. Three final teamwork games reiterated the importance of communication and trust before the group began their 3.5-kilometer return walk to the gate—tired but motivated.

The Hell's Gate outing was not just an excursion outdoors; it was an experience that reminded every senator anew that leadership is not a matter of single-handedness, but listening, working in concert, and building together. Remarking a very memorable outing.
