Mother Language Week

28th February 2022

International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. With over 100 languages spoken here at Braeburn, this day is happily celebrated as both pupils and teachers explore the languages spoken within our school community and the world over.

We celebrated our Mother Languages throughout this week with a variety of fun activities from singing, reading and listening to stories written in Mother Language, exploring different letters and words in different languages as well as discussions of how to preserve our mother languages so that they don’t die out.

We put great focus on celebrating diversity and advancing inclusion in our school through using different greetings everyday and by giving every child an opportunity to share something about themselves and their mother language. Our greatest find during our research this week is the Whistle Language spoken in Kuşköy, a village in Turkey.

We continue to treasure the preservation, usage and promotion of all languages in our school.
