The girls did unbelievably well to finish as runner’s up at the Ndume 7s. We had managed to string together 5 training sessions leading up to the tournament, but most were under less than ideal circumstances as not the entire squad was able to attend. Adding onto our preparation woes, was one of our key players - Carla - not being able to attend due to illness.
The girls arrived at the crack of dawn on Saturday with great positivity and enthusiasm and were up for the challenge that lay ahead of them. We started off with a 0-0 draw in the first game against Pembroke as the girls were yet to get into their stride. We followed on with a 2-1 victory against Peponi in the next game and we went on to beat St. Andrew’s 3-0. The girls were now well and truly in the mood as we went on to beat Kenton 4-0. The next match would pit us against The Banda in a match that would decide who went straight into the finals awaiting the team that would come out victorious in the semi-final match.
We beat The Banda 1-0 in a well-deserved victory to book our spot in the finals. The Banda came out victorious in the semi-final match to book a rematch with us in the grand finale. It was a hard fought final as the teams struggled to get the better of each other throughout the match. The game went all the way into extra time and the golden try rule was applied. This was not enough to settle the scores as the game now progressed into the next phase where a player from each team would be pulled off the pitch after each minute without a scored try. The Banda eventually managed to score a try at the death with everyone’s legs tiring and clinched the victory.
As well as finishing runner's up as a team, a Pembroke player and our own Lara Bailey were awarded players of the tournament.
The girls should be massively proud of themselves as they gave a great account of themselves and the entire Braeburn School as a whole.
