Rethinking Testing: Learning Beyond the Exam

27th September 2025

Testing will always be part of school life, but it should not be something to fear. At our school, we have moved away from high-stakes exams where everything depends on one test. Instead, we now use a variety of assessments that give us a better picture of and focus on each student's progress and growth over time.

Why Not High Stakes Testing?

One stressful test day cannot capture all the effort, creativity, and growth you have shown throughout the year. Instead, we use a mix of different forms of assessment to give a fuller picture:

  • Classwork and Homework: shows consistency and application
  • Quizzes and Short Tests: quick checks to guide teaching
  • Projects and Presentations: creativity, collaboration, and problem solving
  • End of Topic Assessments: deeper understanding of a unit.

How Teachers Use the Data

Think of assessments as feedback tools. We do not just record scores; we look at patterns where you shine, where you struggle, and how to support you better.

New to Look out for in Your Reports

In your reports this year, you will see:

  • CAT4 Grade: a benchmark from cognitive ability tests showing your potential
  • Teacher Predicted Grade (TPG): the teacher's professional forecast of where you are heading with the current continued effort
  • Working At Grade: the level you are currently demonstrating in your work

Together, these grades help us and you build a rounded picture of progress.

How Parents Can Support

Encourage effort and progress, not just final marks

  • Ask “What did you learn?” rather than “What did you get?”
  • Celebrate small wins because confidence is powerful fuel for learning

Pro Tip: Parents can also monitor their child's progress on Century Tech. This not only helps identify areas to improve but also encourages learners to take ownership of their learning and close any gaps. We hope you enjoyed the recent Century Tech Parent Webinar which offered more insights into how we can work together to support students on their learning journey.

Students in Years 9 to 11 are especially encouraged to use Century Tech as part of their revision. It is a powerful tool to help them review topics, build confidence and fill in any gaps in their learning.

How Students Can Prepare and Stay Positive

  • See every test as practice for growth, not a judgment
  • Revise little and often; it is more effective than cramming
  • Sleep well, eat well, and come in with a positive mindset

The big message here is that tests are not traps; they are signposts on the learning journey. Let us treat them as opportunities to grow, reflect, and keep moving forward.

"If you are consistent, you will get it. If you are persistent, you will keep it." ~ Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
