Science in Action: Key Stage 2 Happy Hour!

23rd April 2026

The first week of Term 3 brought a surge of scientific energy to Key Stage 2 as pupils participated in a dynamic "Science Happy Hour" from the 22nd to the 24th of April. This event served as a brilliant bridge between theoretical classroom knowledge and hands-on application. Across the keystage, young scientists were seen putting their heads together to solve problems, test hypotheses, and witness the laws of physics and biology come to life through interactive experiments.

In the lower years, the focus was on the hidden forces that shape our world. Year 3 and 4 pupils took a deep dive into the botanical world, exploring forces that seemingly defy gravity. By investigating how water travels from the damp ground all the way up to the highest leaves of a plant, they gained a firsthand understanding of capillary action and transpiration. Meanwhile, Year 5 turned their attention to the mechanics of motion. Their challenge was to design and build intricate marble runs, where they had to carefully calculate and observe the forces that slow down or stop an object, mastering the concepts of friction and air resistance in the process.

The oldest pupils in the stage, Year 6, took on the role of engineers by focusing on electrical design. They applied their previous term’s study to create complex circuits, demonstrating how electricity can be both functional and aesthetic through their creative designs. It was truly inspiring to see the pupils transition from "learning about" science to "doing" science. By the end of the three-day event, every child had a clearer grasp of how these practical skills either explain the natural wonders of our planet or provide the foundation for the technology and art we use every day.
