9th June 2023
On Friday 9th June, Braeburn celebrated World Environment Day, a day gazetted by the United Nations to encourage worldwide awareness and deliberate action to protect the environment. Each year, there’s a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern, and for 2023, the theme is ‘#BeatPlasticSolution'.
At Braeburn, the day kicked off with pupils reflecting on various plastic pollution issues that are impacting our world. This served as a reminder that every individual effort can contribute to the greater cause. Thereafter, they showed their support and protection for nature by carrying out different activities that showcased their knowledge of the plastic ‘problem’, creating individual and collective resolutions to minimise, if not completely stop, the use of single use plastic.
“I will make sure we always carry reusable cloth bags when my family and I go grocery shopping.” Karim, Year 6.
“I will be more mindful of throwing trash in the right bins, so that recycling is easier.” Tiraji, Year 4.
“I want to get to a point where I do not use plastic at all, just like a family friend of mine.” Lison, Year 7.
Even the little ones in the Early Years Foundation Stage got involved in the day's activities. They learnt how to separate items at the rubbish bins in order to ease recycling, later having a go at this activity using rubbish that they had generated themselves. Later on, they visited the school’s recycling centre, where they saw how the school's rubbish gets sorted and separated, ensuring that over 97% of it is recycled.
It was a truly enlightening day that inspired both the children and the adults to be good caretakers of our world.
