The Year 10 Food and Nutrition class recently went on an educational trip to Browns to learn more about how different foods are produced and prepared. When we arrived, we were taken to a courtyard where we received a short briefing about the farm and its history, and were given hairnets for hygiene before entering the food production area to keep everything clean and hygienic.
We began the tour in the ice cream section, where we learned about the process of making ice cream using organic ingredients. They do all their processes on site making their products real and the traceability true. We then visited the cheese production area and learned how different types of cheese are made before going into the cheese cave where the cheese is aged. There were many large cheese wheels stored there, some almost as old as we are. After that, they took us to the mill section. Again all milling is done onsite to the exact requirements for each of their products. They showed us how their bread and crackers are made, with the crackers being made by hand.
During the visit we were also able to taste several of Browns’ products. We tried granola bars, tasted drinking vinegar mixed with different flavours, and sampled kombucha. Not to mention a variety of their great cheeses. We made our own pickled carrots and later had the chance to make pizzas. While the pizzas were being baked, we went to see the animals around the farm. We then enjoyed eating the pizzas we had made for lunch and were also given ice cream. Some of the boys had the opportunity to milk a cow before we left.
Overall, the trip was both fun and educational and helped us better understand the processes behind the foods we learn about in our Food and Nutrition class.
