This term, Year 1 has been exploring the fascinating world of animals in Science, learning not only about their characteristics but also the Kiswahili names for common safari animals. To bring their studies to life, they visited The Nairobi Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage. On the safari walk, they spotted incredible wildlife, including kiboko (hippopotamus), kifaru (rhinoceros), nyumbu (wildebeest), fisi (hyena), and mamba (crocodile).
After lunch, the pupils toured the Animal Orphanage, where they identified even more animals, such as tumbiri (monkey), simba (lion), chui (leopard), duma (cheetah), nyati (buffalo), ngiri (warthog), swara (antelope), and kobe (tortoise). They also observed fascinating animal behaviours, like mammals feeding their young, reptiles basking in the sun, and both herbivores and carnivores enjoying their meals. How many of these Kiswahili animal names do you recognise?
