Kiswahili lessons in Year 1 this term have focused on wild animals and safaris. To practise their new Swahili vocabulary skills, they went to The Nairobi Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage. First up was a tour of the orphanage, where they learned about different animals and birds. They were able to identify animals such as tumbiri, simba, chui, duma, nyati, ngiri, swara, kobe and some birds such as kanga. The highlight, however, was a beautiful peacock (tausi) that had all our pupils in awe!
The Year 1s then embarked on a safari walk where we spent time admiring the famous rhino (kifaru) munching away at a large heap of foliage. We were so lucky to see many other animals such as kiboko, sokwe, nyumbu, fisi and mamba.
The day was crowned off with a wonderful picnic in Ngong Forest, where we enjoyed a sumptuous lunch and played fun-filled games under the cool shade provided by the many large canopy trees .
Can you identify some of the animals named above in Swahili?
