Year 1 Turn Recycled Material into Works of Art

11th May 2023

On May 9th and 11th, Year 1 had an awesome school trip to enrich their learning on ‘Everyday Materials’, a topic they had immersed themselves in during Science lessons. Our pupils started their day with a visit to the Ocean Sole factory in Karen, where they learnt about recycling materials. They had a tour around the factory and saw how old and damaged flip flops can turn into something new and beautiful without wasting materials.

After a yummy snack of popcorn and Ribena juice, graciously provided by Ocean Sole, the children had the option of making their own masks using recycled materials or a beaded bracelet to take home with them. When the Year 1s got back to school, they met Mr Dudu, a recycling artist who trained with Kitengela Glass. Mr. Dudu guided the pupils on how to make their very own mosaics using recycled glass, wood and glue.

The day was crowned with every pupil receiving a certificate from Ocean Sole, which put a smile on many small faces.
