Year 1 Visit the Gurudwara

19th June 2023

The Year 1’s have been learning about Sikhism in their Religious Education topic. They have learned about the Sikh faith, traditions, values and cultures. To enrich their learning, they had a day off their usual timetable to celebrate and engage with the culture.

The day began by having traditional Indian henna painted on their hands. They then learnt about Rangoli patterns and tried to imitate this using chalks on the playground. After that, they took a trip on the school bus to the Gurudwara on Brookside Drive, where they got to see the temple and how people worship there, as well as eat some delicious, vegetarian Indian foods. These included chapati, chickpea curry, rice and bhajia. Once they returned to school, they did some Bollywood dancing, baking of traditional Indian coconut candy treats and some arts and crafts.

They had a lovely day and were able to show amazing respect for different backgrounds, religions and cultures within the school and the country. The Year 1's were also able to build an understanding for the people around them, to celebrate our diversity and develop their knowledge on Sikhism.
