The year 10 trip to Diani was truly an unforgettable time. On the 25th of May, we travelled to Mombasa in the SGR. Although it was a lengthy journey, a whole 6 hours, we were sure to make the most of it. We arrived at Diani Sea Lodge in the afternoon and were welcomed to a charming hotel with a picturesque view of the sea. That afternoon, as well as the ones that followed, we filled our free time with relaxing pool and ocean swims. In the evenings, we often played pool, table tennis, darts, or simply enjoyed each other’s company.
On our first proper morning at the coast, we were split into two groups, one of which would be doing water activities, and the other going off in a glass-bottom boat to snorkel. Visible in the glass boat were colourful fish and coral, which we got to observe more closely as we snorkelled at the disappearing island. As one group snorkelled, the other avidly took part in various water activities. These included: kite surfing, beach volleyball, bowling and tubing.
After lunch, one group journeyed to the Kaya Kinondo sacred forest. As we walked through the forest, we were regaled with the fascinating stories of the rituals of the Kaya people. At the Colobus conservation, the other group learned about the protection of primates and got to view the monkeys and their temporary homes. One of the many precious baby monkeys was an albino named “Mzungu” with a poignant backstory. The following day the groups switched activities to ensure that everyone got a full experience.
On the last night, although dreading having to leave Diani the next day, we had a disco filled with good music and great dancing. The last morning was a blur of packing and preparing to leave, with a backdrop of heavy Diani rain. Clearly, it didn’t want to see us leave either! Back on the SGR, we savoured our last few moments of the trip and arrived back in school at about 9pm on the 28th.
Overall, the trip was an exhilarating experience and a memory that I am certain we will cherish for years to come.
