As Year 11 Economics students, we took part in an unforgettable trip to Kibera as part of our syllabus coverage on living standards and economic development. The aim of the visit was to gain a real understanding of how people live in different economic conditions and how those conditions affect households and livelihoods, and it turned out to be both heartwarming and eye-opening.
Earlier in the morning, Mrs Entonu went with Kimaya and Tamanda for a supermarket run to buy supplies like rice, ugali flour, chapati flour, salt, sugar, cooking oil, bathing soap, bar soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, and yellow kidney beans and a few other basic essentials; in preparation for our afternoon visit to six different homes.
Once in Kibera, we were split into three groups of six, with each group assigned to visit two homes. We presented baskets of supplies to the families and took time to sit, talk, ask questions and laugh with the mothers and residents in each household. The conversations were filled with warmth and gratitude, giving everyone a new perspective on community and resilience.
The trip was an inspiring and meaningful experience that allowed us to connect what we have learned in class to real life. It was an insightful and truly wonderful experience and this is a trip that we all will certainly never forget.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our parents for their unwavering support and contributions, which helped make this trip such a meaningful experience for us.
