Year 2 Explores a Church, Mosque and Synagogue

24th May 2023

In world views lessons this term, Year 2 has been learning about different religions and their cultures, giving our pupils the chance to talk about and share their diverse beliefs. So to further help the Year 2s visualise the different places of worship, we organised a trip to a church, mosque and synagogue.

First up was a visit to St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, where the parish priest gave them a guided tour and talked to them about the origin of Christianity, explaining the many symbols displayed within the church.

Next we visited Bukhari Mosque which neighbours the church. The girls showed respect for the mosque by covering their hair as required. Inside the mosque, they listened to the Imam as he talked about Islam and how muslims worship. Some of the boys who are muslim got a chance to demonstrate to their peers how they pray.

Finally, came the visit to The Nairobi Hebrew Congregation (Synagogue) where we met the Rabbi. He talked to the children about the origins of the Jewish religion and also showed them the Torah, demonstrating how it is read.

All in all, it was an interesting and informative experience for both pupils and teachers on the trip, enabling all to experience and appreciate each other's beliefs and cultural practices.
