Year 2 Make Big Discoveries at the Nairobi National Museum

11th March 2026

On Wednesday, 11th March, there was a different kind of buzz in the air as our Year 2 pupils swapped their desks for sun hats and clipboards. We set off for the Nairobi National Museum and Snake Park and from the moment the bus doors opened, it was clear we were in for a special day.

The highlight for many was finally meeting "Turkana Boy." After weeks of talking about him in our Early Man lessons, seeing his skeleton in the flesh (or rather, bone!) was a real "wow" moment. You could almost see the cogs turning as the pupils stood quietly, realizing that the history they’d been reading about was actually standing right there in front of them. It wasn’t just a lesson anymore; it was real.

We also had the chance to wander through the museum’s newest addition; a beautiful tribute to the Mara River. The pupils were completely captivated by the story of the Great Migration. Seeing the scale of the wildebeest journey across the water seemed to give them a whole new respect for the wonders of the Kenyan landscape we are so lucky to call home.

Of course, the energy levels spiked when we headed over to the Snake Park! There were plenty of "oohs" and "aahs" (and maybe a few nervous giggles) as we watched cobras and puff adders glide behind the glass. We spent a good deal of time comparing the slow, steady pace of the tortoises to the lightning-fast scuttle of the lizards. Watching the pupils point out the difference between the basking crocodiles and the alligators was a proud moment for all the teachers, it’s amazing how much they’ve picked up about different animal groups.
