This past Wednesday, Year 3 set off on an exciting adventure to Ngong Forest, eager to explore one of our closest forest reserves. From the moment the buses left Braeburn, the air was filled with energy and anticipation. In Topic, the children have been learning about tropical rainforests, alongside studying plants in Science, making this trip the perfect opportunity to bring their learning to life.
Thankfully, the recent heavy rains held off. The day began with a warm welcome from the forest guides, who introduced the pupils to the history and importance of Ngong Forest. The children were reminded of the vital role forests play—keeping the air clean, providing habitats for wildlife, and helping regulate the local climate.
The walking trail and tree planting were among the highlights of the day. As they trekked through the forest, pupils explored buttress roots, searched for nests, spotted dik-diks, discovered porcupine dens, marveled at orb spiders, and counted butterflies along the way. After the walk, each child proudly planted a young seedling, contributing to the forest’s ongoing conservation.
The trip to Ngong Forest was not only enjoyable but also educational and inspiring. Year 3 returned to school with muddy shoes, bright smiles, and a deeper connection to nature. Most importantly, they came back with rich experiential learning—and a sense of pride in having contributed to protecting the environment, one seedling at a time.
