Year 4s, the Local Nature Detectives in Karura Forest!

25th November 2022

Year 4 pupils took a trip to Karura Forest, the famous forest within a city, to consolidate their learning of 'Living Things and their Habitats', a topic that was covered in Science lessons. They made a 4.5 km hike up to a waterfall, and along the way made observations of the various living things found within the forest habitat. They observed safari ants, praying mantis, a Sykes' monkey, snails, butterflies and bats. They also spied ferns, mosses, mushrooms, flowers and lots of different species of trees.

It was encouraging to see Year 4s discuss among themselves how these living things are suited to the forest habitat, and how the habitat provides them with what they need to survive. Overall the pupils enjoyed being able to see, hear and touch different species of animals and plants, some of which they were seeing for the very first time.

Well done to our young detectives who didn't let the mud stop them from being local nature detectives and identifying various plants and animals in this forest habitat!
