Year 5 Mount Longonot Trip

30th October 2021

Year 5 visited Mount Longonot National Park in an attempt to climb up Mount Longonot, a dormant volcano located in the Great Rift Valley. It was a fantastic experience which challenged both our most energetic students and novice climbers.

It was a beautifully warm day as the pupils arrived at the national park. They met the very knowledgeable guides (who are part of the ‘Longonot Adventures’ team) and began the ascent. The pupils saw Thompson gazelles and learnt about the mutualistic relationship between the whistling thorn acacia trees and the ants which inhabit the bulbous spines.

Within the hour, some of the quicker climbers had reached the summit and experienced the beauty of what Mount Longonot has to offer. With stunning views of Lake Naivasha on one side, and dense forest inside the crater on the other - it is truly a unique experience.

It was fantastic to see the drive, resilience and resolve shown by the whole year group. It was a tough experience for many, with some admitting it was their ‘first hike’. This experience we hope shall inspire the Year 5 pupils to get out and experience the outdoors more and appreciate the merits of hard work in order to achieve their goals.
