In week 7, Year 5 travelled down to the coast to explore the history of Mombasa. This was the first time the trip has run for three years and whilst we were all excited, there were some nerves and anxiety about spending an extended period of time away from home. I am delighted to say that all the children in Year 5 rose to the challenge and embraced every aspect of being away from their family with open arms.
We travelled to the coast on the SGR and it was soon clear the children still haven’t quite grasped the concept of time. Within 20 minutes all snacks were eaten with many asking, "How long left?" They soon managed their expectations and after a long journey we arrived at the Reef Hotel, Mombasa and plunged into the pool. Everyone was in fantastic spirits and home was soon forgotten.
Over the next few days we had a number of activities planned by Infinity Outdoors including a dhow trip; visit to Haller park in which we saw crocodiles, snakes and 100 year old tortoises; trip to Fort Jesus and beach activities. All activities were expertly planned and kept the children engaged and entertained over the three days. After each activity we met back at the hotel and cooled off in the pool.
On the final night was the highly anticipated disco. Dresses were carefully chosen by the girls and favourite t-shirts were re-used by the boys in the build up to the biggest night of the year. Partners were chosen for dances that would never happen and the tension was palpable… In the end, they were all absolutely exhausted. The disco ended and we headed to bed for a 4.45am departure back to Nairobi.
We are all so proud of our students and the way they conducted themselves on the trip. They showed kindness, outstanding timekeeping, organisation and resilience. We hope they continue this independence and brilliant attitude into Year 6.
