Year 7s Dive into Meteorology and Eco-Artistry

7th November 2023

On Tuesday, November 7th, the Year 7 pupils embarked on an educational trip to The Kenya Meteorological Department and Ocean Sole Factory. The day unfolded with an immersive experience at the Meteorological Department, where students engaged in outdoor activities to observe and analyse the ever-changing weather conditions. Exploring various weather instruments, they delved into the fascinating realm of how weather is measured, fostering a deeper understanding of meteorology.

Our pupils demonstrated their enthusiasm by actively reflecting on, posing questions about, and discussing pertinent issues related to climate change. It was encouraging to witness their engagement in real-world applications of scientific concepts.

The trip then transitioned to the Ocean Sole Factory, an eye-opening adventure where Year 7s witnessed the transformation of one million discarded flip-flops into captivating works of art. This visit seamlessly connected with last year's efforts against plastic pollution, reinforcing the importance of recycling and repurposing materials. The tour also served as an extension of the Year 7s' exploration of environmental issues in their English lessons this term.

A highlight of the trip was the hands-on activity involving the creation of masks and bracelets using recycled flip-flop material. This practical exercise not only added a creative dimension to the day but also deepened the students' comprehension of how plastic impacts the environment. The experience dovetailed seamlessly with the ongoing 'Your World' persuasive writing scheme of work in English, providing a tangible connection between classroom learning and real-world environmental challenges.
