Year 8s Develop Independence at Batian’s View Camp

25th April 2023

Year 8 pupils had an adventurous and fun-filled week from the 25th to 29th April, up on Mt Kenya, at Batian's View camp. They camped every night, sometimes in the rain, but they showed great can-do spirit, so much so, no complaints were heard. There were a lot of activities that the Year 8s participated in, such as a hike to a forest in the foothills of Mt Kenya, where our pupils enjoyed the beautiful scenery and chatted with their friends. A highlight for many was crossing and playing in the river over the lunch break.

They then camped a night in the forest and cooked their own meals using a little stove. This was a great team building activity and they had a great time harnessing their independence skills. After dinner, our pupils participated in a spirited singing competition around the campfire, with boys going against girls, and what fun it was!

Then there was a visit to Ol Pejeta, where they had the opportunity to meet Baraka, the blind rhino, and take a photo with him. They also visited a chimpanzee sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees, and the Ol Pejeta Information Centre where they found out more about animal conservation. On the journey around Ol Pejeta, they saw many different species of wildlife, truly appreciating all that Kenya is blessed with.

Other activities on the trip involved a climbing wall, a zip-line through the forest, and the group favourite - the screamer (a very high swing!). All in all the Year 8s were an amazing group of outdoor enthusiasts, exhibiting positive attitudes and the willingness to include everyone in all social activities. A few had this to say:

“It was fun. People were exposed to different adventures and discovered new experiences like hiking and the screamer. There are parts that were tiring but after all people were happy they had finally finished and could relax.” Ethan 8B

It was fun, lots of people socialised with new people and it connected us. Lots of people faced their fears, for example their fear of heights.” Faith 8B

“It was a new experience that took you out of your comfort zone and made you aware of your time management.” Debora 8K

“I liked rock climbing even though I didn't finish it. I liked the hike, especially going over the river and the screamer was fun.” Goje 8J

“The trip was really good. I liked the screamer and zip lining because it was scary and fun.” Raheeg 8J
