This week, the Year 9’s had a wonderful opportunity to experience an IGCSE options evening led by the school’s teachers, staff and student leadership. The Options' Evening occurs before 9.5 to help students to choose and further understand the various subject options available. Students could interact with teachers and ask questions to gain an idea of which subjects they should take in the future. Furthermore, parents could get a more vivid picture of what the Cambridgeand Pearson curricula can offer and their child’s future career paths.
Before the Options' Evening started, both the students and parents were briefed on the different options, how the selection process works and partially introduced the new subjects the Year 9’s could take. They were advised on the lessons that match up well and the not so smart option match ups. The briefing gave most students, parents peace of mind as choosing subjects can be stressful and emotionally draining. The meeting - held by Mr Manning and Mr Welch - answered all the various questions people were concerned about which reduced the panic most people acquired. Moreover, the meeting inspired most students to see what their future entails, and made a positive impact on choosing their new subjects.
The Options' Evening was eye-opening as students could immerse themselves in the subjects they look forward to doing or to further understand subjects they may have looked down upon. It also helps teachers gauge an idea on the amount of students who may want to take part in their subjects or have passion towards them. The evening also helped teachers to better understand their students and their goals they’d like to achieve.
What most took away from both the Options' and Careers' Evenings was a clearer image of their future and excitement towards it. It only created more positive outlooks which is evident in their lessons. The evenings only eased minds and assisted the pupils that were struggling.
